Bert's Story
Posted Tuesday, July 6, 2021 02:05 PM

1964; our senior year.  We were the rulers of the high school, answering only to the principal, staff, teachers, coaches (is that all?).  One important rule: underclassmen must never trespass on the Senior’s turf, physical or otherwise.  Of course, the Senior Door was off-limits to underclassmen.  One fine spring afternoon, that door was open for ventilation.  I was standing on the steps outside the senior door, talking to a friend, a “solid” classmate.  An intruder approached the door from inside the building, wanting to exit through the Senior Door.  I turned from my friend to speak to the intruder.  He was from the Junior High School, a fellow named Chauncey, a ninth grader who had been left behind twice.  A formidable intruder!

I challenged him, confident that my friend was right behind me: “only seniors may use the senior door”.  He argued “I am using this door!”.  I said “no you are not!”, still confident that I had support from my friend right behind me.  (I would never have challenged Chauncey on my own.)  We argued back and forth, but I (and my friend?) would not give in.  Chauncey eventually backed down, and went to another door to exit the building.

I turned to resume my conversation with my friend.  To my surprise, he was no longer behind me; he left the steps to talk to another classmate who was on the sidewalk near the street in front of the high school.  Say, what?

Who was that “solid” classmate whose support I assumed during my argument with Chauncey?  I’ll give you a hint:

The classmate drove a Dodge (Plymouth?) with the gear-shift-lever (for the automatic transmission) on the dashboard (not on the column, not on the floor).

Still don’t know?  The classmate dated Carol Mayer.  No wait, he didn’t date her.  No wait, he did date her. …

I think we all know now.  If not, the classmate’s initials are G.E.

If you don’t know by now, the classmate is indeed the author of the (much appreciated) newsletter you are now reading, our very own Greg Ehrhardt.
