Joe you were a good soccer player. You had heart and interest in the game. I am so sorry that you were treated unfairly by the RHS gestapo. I don't remember any notice of your suspension. You weren't the middle finger kinda of guy.....you had brains. That's something I would if I was pissed enough.

Joe,I remember those floppy shin guards and the floppy socks to hold them. You were always at practice putting forth your best effort. Your finger was used as a pointer and not a nasty gesture. We even had cheerleaders at some of our games. Great to reminisce.

I was not fishing for a compliment.  Nice to see none-the-less.   It is also nice to know that 60 years later some of my teammates can still remember that I was on the team!  Soccer and baseball were the only sports at RHS that were fully competitive during our years there.  We were a small school in a Large school league (the NNJIL- Ridgewood, Englewood, Teaneck, etc.) Now in NJ, the schools are more evenly matched.  Rutherford is now very strong.  I do not believe that anyone on the soccer team played before they went out for the team freshman year.  Now, all over NJ, kids start playing at 5.  The better players are on a "traveling" team by age 7.

Joe, you were always a good guy not giving you props for playing but the unfair treatment. I just don't see you giving the finger to a teacher. You are right, today's kids are better trained but some of the parents are completely nuts. My grandson travels for baseball and at the games there are lots of parents thinking their child is Mickey Mantle (most don't know that name, showing my age).

I think Ron can confirm, since he was a soccer official, at rec soccer the teams and parents are on the opposite side of the pitch (field for non-soccer fans) because they behave so badly.  I coached several of my daughter's softball teams.  I learbed that experienced coaches lowered the ratings for their kids and raised the level of other coache's kids.  So that when the "draft" was conducted, my team would have no "A" players, since my A was really a B and they had multiple As some disguised as Bs.  The lack of concern for the experience the kids had was appalling, especially when you consider most kids stop at rec and will not play in high school.  I was involved once in a game where the fisrt base person was literally standing on the base, rather than having her one leg touch the base.  The other coach instructed the players to run into this untutured player, rather than explaining what she should do.  Just appalling

So true Joe. I've had experiences when players on the field of play have yelled to their parents to sit down and be quiet. Embarrassing for the player and parent. Good athletic directors control crowds before these situations occur. Opposite sides for teams and spectators is always a must.

I remember Joe as the RHS Mock Trial Coach..

I was doing a closing for a client and the seller was represented by a Rutherford attorney.  As is customary, I had reason to interact with that office's legal assistant and was ultimately shocked to learn that she was Doug's daughter!  A lovely and knowledgeable young woman.  Her parents should be very proud.

I did help coach the Rutherford Mock trial Team which competed in the Bergen County BAr Association's annual competition.  It was always inspiring to work with the kids.  They would start out with an assigned case, alternating between a civil case and a criminal case, the kids would be the lawyers and the witnesses.  The kids knew nothing about the process at the outset, but always made tremendous progress and were quite good, by the time the cases were argued in the competition.  I was never able to take the team to the heights that they dewserved.  But, I dare say that each participant found the experience to be well worth the time that they spent.  RHS and other public schools were at a disadvantege since the parochials used school time to prepare their teams.  SO to level the playing field, since the privates (both Catholic and Jewish) were often all male, I told the girlson our team, to put their hands on the thigh of the opponent seated at counsel table next to them.  That would man he could not stand for the rest of the proceeding.  No one followed my suggestion.

Joe, you're right about the private and proohical schools having an advantage. Yes, my daughter worked at that law firm. Thanks to being a member of the SMHS team. Currently she is case manager of a law firm, Farah and Farah, in Jacksonville Florida . Farah and Farah represent the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Joe, Ron and Jack. Our athletic teams faced some of the largest and best teams in a league with powerhouse teams. If I'm not mistaken, the NNJIL was second to the Montclair Big Ten League.
Our football team was also the last team to beat or tie annual Turkey Day game against Passaic. A riverly that dated back to 1903!!

Thanks, Doug.  I remember the Thanksgiving Day games against Passaic, but I didn't remember that we beat (tied?) Passaic in '64.  My wife is from Passaic, and now I can bug her that RHS was so much better than PHS!  Interestingly, my wife and I never met in HS years, we met serendipitously (whew) years later.  Ask Jan Rosenberg about that.

We were 0- 6 & 2 . We didn't play Hackensack that year because of JFK assassination. I remember being in Mr Munos class when it came over the PA system that he was shot

I remember that we were setting up Hay Bales in the gym. Bob Alyea came in and said some one shot the President about ten seconds before it came over the PA system

My cousin Paul Nargi played in that Thanksgiving game. Also Passaic had a running back named Alonzo Jennings , ran in the Melrose games. In our senior year, Passaic had a receiver Sonny Moss who went to Toledo University and ended up paying in the NFL for the Baltimore Colts.

Jack I remember you being our mascot in the Turkey Day game.. That was the last time RHS beat or tied Passaic. We also tied that "new school" Bergnfield.
All of our athletic teams got bigger in 1963, when teams like Bergnfield, Paramus and Fair Lawn joined the NNJIL 😭

Doug, I remember Stanley Spiro.  Did he move before graduation in '64?  I should check my yearbook ;-)

I think it was Stanley Spero and he was in Union through 6th Grade....don't know what happened after 6th, but there is a big time lawyer in Mass......might be him, age fits but that is all I could get....don't know for sure.

Bert, I'm not sure when he moved to Passaic but I think it was before the Junior High School was built.
