Paul Walter Wernli passed away on Saturday, July 9, 2022 in Arlington, Texas at the age of 76. He was born in Jersey City, New Jersey to Walter and Edna (Goble) Wernli on May 14, 1946. He graduated from Rutherford High School in New Jersey in 1964, and later earned his bachelor’s degree from Emory Riddle Aeronautical University. Soon after his high school graduation, he briefly attended Brooklyn Poly Tech, prior to enlisting in the United States Army in 1966, serving two tours in Vietnam. Over the course of his three decade Army career, he was a helicopter pilot, a test pilot, and a logistical officer, until his retirement in 1996, at the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 5 (CW5). As exemplified by his military record, Paul lived a life of service and honor. His military career spanned thirty years from Vietnam, to duty stations at Ft. Rucker, Alabama; Ft. Campbell, Kentucky; Fulda in Germany; and Ft. Lee, Virginia. Following his detail with Bell Helicopter as an aircraft maintenance test pilot in Texas, he then served at Illesheim, Germany as a logistical maintenance officer. Later, he worked in the defense contracting arena as a logistical analyst for the Army. Subsequently, he worked with various companies until he found a home with Torch Technologies in Huntsville, Alabama, until November, 2021. Over the span of his career, he piloted aircraft to include the UH-1 Huey (various models), AH-1 Cobra (various models), and the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior. His U.S. Army commendations and medals include the Air Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal. Paul was a loving, and deeply funny man, known for his wit, intelligence, generosity, and attractive blue eyes. He was also very proud of his three sons who all served in the military: one with the U.S. Marine Corp.; one with the U.S. Army and Texas Air National Guard; and another with the U.S. Army. In addition, he was devoted to his sister Karen, his grandchildren and his great granddaughter. His warmth, his humor, and his companionship will be deeply missed by neighbors, friends, colleagues, and family. Paul Wernli, was preceded in death by his loving wife, Christiane (Tina) Hausner-Wernli, and his parents Walter and Edna Wernli. His survivors include his sister Karen Wernli-Koteen, of Brick, New Jersey; sisters Margaret and Nadine Wernli of Rutherford, New Jersey; son Brian Wernli of Ft. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made in Paul’s name to the American Cancer Society, or to the Toys for Tots drive sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corp.
