Al Marbaise (Coach)

Alfred Marbaise, 82, whose advocacy of mandatory student drug testing thrust Henry P. Becton Regional High School into the national spotlight three decades ago, died July 31, 2014.

The Jersey City-born educator, who began his career in 1956 at Union School in Rutherford, was inducted four years ago into the Rutherford High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He coached baseball and football; his 1965 baseball team won the Group II State Championship. He served as the Becton Superintendent between 1974 and 1986. A year after leaving Becton, Mr. Marbaise joined the office of the Bergen County superintendent of schools. He was business administrator and acting superintendent.

Mr. Marbaise died of congestive heart failure. He is survived by his wife of 56 years; his children, Beth Planer of Kinnelon, Jon Marbaise of Little Rock, Ark., and Steven Marbaise of Mechanicsburg, Pa., and five grandchildren.
