Philip Stetson (Teacher)

Philip Ward Stetson, 82, died December 8, 2003 at Altoona Hospital. He was born October 12, 1921 in Detroit, MI. He was the son of Raymond and Lilly (Reppert) Stetson. At age 7, he moved to his father's hometown in Howard City, MI. He graduated from high school in 1939 and entered the University of Chicago where he remained for three years until called to military service where he served in the Army ASTP where he learned Japanese. After three years in the US and Philippines, he was discharged as a non-commissioned officer. In March 1945, after which he returned to the University of Chicago and received his Masters Degree in the French Language and Literature in 1949. He married Ruth Esther Charlson of Barnesboro, PA in 1948 where they lived for ten years during which time he taught French at Cresson and Spangler High Schools. They moved to Rutherford, NJ in 1960. He taught at Rutherford High School, Jersey City State College and Montclair State University from which he retired in 1976. He and his wife enjoyed extensive traveling in Europe and spent many summers in Paris. After her death in 1985, he settled in Paris for 7 years where he did volunteer work as a translator and as a pianist in various geriatric centers. He returned to Rutherford, NJ in 1994 and later moved to Altoona, PA to live with his niece Paula Pimentel, 210 E. Alta Avenue, Altoona, PA. He will be greatly missed by his loving nieces, nephews, cousins, his brother-in-law, sister-in-law and dear friends. A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
